An advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister announces that 1,400 police officers from Shingal residents have been recruited for the city, and the recruitment process continues.
Khalaf Sinjari, advisor to Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Iraq’s Prime Minister for Yazidi Kurdish Affairs, announced on Thursday 02-01-2025, “Within the framework of implementing the Shingal Agreement, approximately 1,400 people have been recruited so far for the local police force in Shingal district.”
The agreement between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi government to normalize the situation in Shingal was signed in October 2020.
The Kurdistan Region has stated several times that the agreement has not been implemented yet, and considers Baghdad officials negligent.
The agreement includes administrative, security, and reconstruction aspects of Shingal.
According to the agreement, 2,500 police officers from the local population will be recruited for Shingal’s local police force.
According to the Iraqi Prime Minister’s advisor, Shingal’s local police need more personnel to better handle their duties, and the police recruitment process in the district will continue.
After October 16, 2017, an abnormal situation developed in Shingal, especially after Peshmerga forces left these areas.
The security section of the Shingal Agreement between Erbil and Baghdad states:
Only local police, the National Security Agency, and intelligence services should be responsible for security within the town, and all other armed organizations will be moved outside Shingal town’s borders.
The town’s security will be strengthened by recruiting 2,500 people into the internal security forces, ensuring fair representation of camp refugees from the town’s population.
Ending the presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Shingal town and its surrounding areas, and the organization and its affiliates should have no role in the area.
