The head of the Lalish Cultural and Social Center says that he carefully and deeply examines President Barzani’s historic statement about using the term ‘components’ instead of ‘minorities,’ noting that this change in language and expression is more than just changing a word—it represents a fundamental change in social and political understanding.
Saeed Jardo, head of the Lalish Cultural and Social Center in Duhok, told Sama: “President Barzani’s historic statement about using the term ‘components’ instead of ‘minorities’ is more than just changing a word. It’s a fundamental change that recognizes the historical and essential role of all religious and ethnic groups in forming Kurdistan’s identity, as they are integral and inseparable parts of Kurdistan’s past, present, and future.”
Jardo added: “This term carries a clear message to future generations in Kurdistan that no group is a ‘minority,’ but rather all are part of the main social fabric. This will positively impact future generations’ self-awareness and self-confidence.”
The head of the Lalish Center indicated that this step will strengthen coexistence and understanding between all components, as when each group feels equality and respect, it creates a healthier and more united society.
He also said: “This change in language can become a model for the region and the world in how to deal with social and religious diversity. Kurdistan can become a successful example of peaceful coexistence and respect for differences.”
The head of the Lalish Center also suggests that this linguistic change should become part of the education and media system. We need to teach our children that social and religious diversity is a source of richness and strength, not weakness. Additionally, this new vision should be reflected in the Kurdistan Region’s laws and regulations, and all components should participate equally in decision-making and government institutions.
He also pointed out that President Barzani’s step shows a deep understanding of the importance of unity and solidarity among the people of Kurdistan. This is the beginning of a long road, but it’s an important step towards a brighter future for all components of Kurdistan.
