Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday met with prominent Kurdish writer and intellectual Fuad Majeed Misri, reaffirming his government’s commitment to promoting the Region’s cultural, literary, and artistic heritage.
Although the meeting did not produce any major political announcements, it served as a clear signal of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s continued backing of cultural initiatives. A statement from the KRG said both sides emphasized the vital role of writers, artists, and intellectuals in preserving and advancing the Kurdish language and identity.
PM Barzani stressed the importance of empowering intellectuals to contribute more actively to the Region’s creative and social development. He said the KRG would continue to support efforts aimed at fostering creativity and innovation in the cultural sector.
The KRG has long presented itself as a defender of Kurdish heritage, particularly in the face of decades of Arabization and cultural repression under successive Iraqi regimes. Since gaining autonomous status in the 1990s, the Region has made cultural revival a key part of its identity-building efforts, including supporting Kurdish-language publishing, television, and festivals.
Fuad Majeed Misri is a well-known figure in Kurdish literary circles, with a body of work that reflects on Kurdish society, language, and national consciousness. His meeting with the prime minister highlights the KRG’s strategy of engaging influential voices to strengthen the Region’s cultural foundations.
