The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, on Tuesday extended his warmest congratulations to the “loyal fans of Zakho Club” on the occasion of winning a FIFA award.
This came in a post on the X platform, in which he said: “I extend my warmest congratulations to the loyal fans of Zakho Club on winning the FIFA award. This is a great achievement for sports and sports fans throughout Kurdistan and Iraq.”
On Tuesday, 16 December 2025, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced that Zakho Club had won the award for Best Fans Worldwide.
Zakho Club fans received the highest percentage of votes globally after being nominated by FIFA for the 2025 award.
FIFA announced the voting results for the Best Fans award this year, with Zakho surpassing its Argentine and Spanish competitors to become the first fan base in the Middle East to win this prestigious award.
The The Best awards ceremony is scheduled to take place tonight at 8:00 PM (Erbil time), with the attendance of around 800 guests at the Fairmont Katara Hall in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The ceremony will honor the best in men’s and women’s football. However, FIFA announced Zakho’s victory in the Best Fans category ahead of the ceremony after the club received the highest number of votes.
A representative of Zakho Club is set to participate in the ceremony online from Doha and will be congratulated by the FIFA President.
During a match between Zakho Club and Al-Hudood Club in last season’s Iraqi Stars League, Zakho fans presented thousands of cartons of milk to children suffering from cancer as a humanitarian gesture. This act prompted FIFA to recognize and select them for the The Best award.
