For the first time, a Swedish woman will be tried on charges of genocide against Yazidis
According to Swedish authorities, a Swedish woman is being charged with crimes of genocide and serious war crimes against Yazidi women and children in Syria.
On Thursday, September 19, 2024, Swedish authorities charged a 52-year-old Swedish woman named Lina Laina Ishaq with crimes of genocide and serious war crimes against Yazidi women and children in Syria.
Swedish authorities indicate that between 2014 and 2016, Lina Laina Ishaq committed several crimes against humanity, particularly against Yazidi women and children, in Raqqa, the capital of ISIS.
In this regard, Reena Devgon, Sweden’s Attorney General, said in a statement: “This is the first time that ISIS criminals who committed crimes against Yazidis are being tried in Sweden.”
According to another statement from the Stockholm Court of Justice, between 2014 and 2016 in Raqqa, Lina Laina Ishaq captured several Yazidi women and children, subjected them to severe physical and psychological torture, and deprived them of their basic rights on cultural, religious, and gender grounds, which is a complete violation of international laws.
The Stockholm Court of Justice emphasized that the accused aimed to destroy all or part of the Yazidis as part of the conflict and armed war against this community.
