Latest update on mass graves of Ezidi victims in Sinjar

Sema

Despite the passage of several years since the Ezidi genocide, a total of 95 mass graves of Ezidi victims have been discovered in Sinjar, with only 77 of them exhumed so far.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Khairi Ali, head of the Petricor Organization for Human Rights in Sinjar, told Sema that following the 2014 attack by the terrorist organization ISIS on Sinjar district, hundreds of civilians were killed and buried in mass graves. To date, 95 such graves have been identified.

He added that from the graves opened so far, 857 sets of human remains have been recovered and transferred to the forensic medicine department in Baghdad for DNA testing.

Ali further noted that 296 remains have been officially identified, while the fate of 561 others is still unknown, as identification procedures continue slowly in Baghdad.

Families of the victims, burdened with grief and pain, continue to wait for the results of the examinations, hoping to learn the fate of their loved ones.

On August 3, 2014, ISIS launched an attack on Sinjar and its surrounding areas, leading to the genocide of thousands of Ezidis and the abduction of thousands of Ezidi women and children.
