Iraqi Interior Ministry and National Security Agency Report Significant Arrests in First Half of 2024

The Iraqi Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday that over 10,000 individuals were arrested on various charges in the first half of this year.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Miqdad Miri highlighted in a statement that during this period, the judiciary issued 140 death sentences and 500 life sentences.

The arrests mainly involved crimes such as drug trafficking, theft, fraud, smuggling of heavy currency, and other significant offenses. This represents an increase from the 8,000 suspects arrested in the same period last year.

Last week, the Iraqi National Security Agency (INSA) reported the arrest of 600 cybercriminals and hackers over the past six months.

INSA spokesperson Arshad Hakim stated that the agency is conducting a comprehensive campaign against cybercrime, which has seen a rise, especially on social media platforms where criminal networks exploit users, particularly women and girls, for financial gain.

Hakim noted that numerous reports and complaints about cybercrimes have been received, leading to ongoing efforts to raise awareness and mitigate the threat posed by these networks.
