The spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Civil Defense stated that the number of accidents, particularly drownings and fires, is increasing in the Kurdistan Region.

On Friday, June 21, 2024, Sarkawt Karash, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Civil Defense, told Kurdistan24 that the number of fires and drownings in the Kurdistan Region has increased this year compared to previous years.

Sarkawt Karash reported that 404 incidents were recorded during the four days of Eid al-Adha, which is a high number compared to previous years.

He stated that 348 of the incidents were related to fires in fields and agricultural lands, and seven people drowned.

Karash explained that the main reasons for most of the fires in different parts of the Kurdistan Region are high temperatures, negligence by citizens, and lack of attention to the civil defense guidelines on fire prevention.

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Civil Defense announced that according to the preparations and plans for the four days of Eid al-Adha, the provincial civil defense directorates and autonomous administrations worked to protect citizens’ homes.

Karash added that the directors, officers, and employees of all provincial departments and autonomous administrations were on duty during the four days of Eid to protect citizens.

According to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), 404 incidents were registered during the four days of the holidays, including 348 fires, while seven drowning incidents were reported in the waters and rivers of the Kurdistan Region. In Sulaimani province, two citizens drowned; in Zakho autonomous administration, one citizen drowned; in Soran autonomous administration, two citizens drowned; and in Garmian autonomous administration, five citizens were rescued from drowning.

Additionally, a citizen died in a mountain fall in the Soran Independent Administration, and the body is still in Soran forensic medicine with the identity unknown.
