Sema

The First Karkh Investigative Court announced that it has begun investigation procedures against 1,387 members of the ISIS terrorist organization, who were recently transferred from detention facilities in Syrian territory.

Under the direct supervision of the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, investigations have commenced by a number of judges specialized in counterterrorism cases. All procedures concerning the detainees will be carried out within approved legal and humanitarian frameworks, in accordance with national laws and international standards.

These measures come as part of Iraq’s efforts to complete investigations and hold those involved in ISIS crimes accountable under applicable laws, alongside international coordination aimed at addressing the ISIS file and crimes that amount to genocide and crimes against humanity.

The statement noted that the expected number of transferred ISIS members may exceed 7,000, while the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation will work to document and provide investigative bodies and courts with previously archived documents and evidence.
