The Presidency of the Iraqi Council of Representatives announced on Monday that Saturday, April 11, has been set as the date for holding a session to elect the President of the Republic, stressing the need to proceed with completing constitutional requirements to form a new government.

This came during an expanded meeting held by the Council’s Presidency with the heads of parliamentary blocs, dedicated to discussing pending legislative and political files.

According to an official statement, participants reviewed a package of key laws proposed for inclusion on the agenda of upcoming sessions, in addition to continuing the process of voting on members of the permanent parliamentary committees.

The issue of electing the President of the Republic topped the meeting’s agenda, with the Presidency emphasizing the importance of ending the current political deadlock, particularly in light of ongoing security and economic challenges facing the country.

The Presidency also called on political bloc leaders to “assume their national responsibilities” and expedite constitutional timelines, ensuring the formation of a capable government able to address crises and deliver services to citizens.
