On Kurdish Journalism Day: President Masoud Barzani affirms support for journalists in defending the people’s causes

President Masoud Barzani sent a congratulatory message on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, to all journalists and media professionals in Kurdistan on the occasion of Kurdish Journalism Day and the 128th anniversary of the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper.

In his message, President Barzani highly praised the historic step taken by Prince Miqdad Midhat Bedirkhan, who published the first issue of the newspaper Kurdistan in Cairo in 1898, noting that this occasion gains added significance as it coincides with the anniversary of the founding of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate.

The message stated: “I extend my warmest congratulations to all journalists, media professionals, and members of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate, wishing them continued success in carrying out their noble duties.” He affirmed his full support for journalists in performing their professional responsibilities, highlighting the great responsibility they bear.

President Barzani emphasized the fundamental role of Kurdish media in three key pillars:

  1. Defending the cause: Upholding the just rights and cause of the people of Kurdistan in international forums.
  2. Culture of peace: Promoting tolerance and strengthening coexistence among all components.
  3. Social values: Preserving the noble values and ethics that characterize Kurdistan’s society.

He also stressed that journalism has been and will remain a cornerstone in the journey toward freedom and democratic development in the Kurdistan Region.
