Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani is set to visit Erbil on Wednesday to meet with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The high-level talks are expected to address key issues including the formation of the new cabinet, public sector salaries and budget allocations, a general population census, oil exports, and other pressing matters impacting both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

This visit is considered crucial in light of recent parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, which have underscored the importance of coordination between the regional and federal governments. Peshawa Hawramani, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), emphasized the significance of al-Sudani’s visit, describing it as “important and positive” in advancing political stability and cooperation. He further highlighted that the established rapport between the two prime ministers has been instrumental in fostering closer ties between Baghdad and Erbil.

Since assuming office, Prime Minister al-Sudani has visited the Kurdistan Region three times, with his most recent visit on Sept. 11, 2023. His consistent engagement underscores the importance of ongoing dialogue between the KRG and the Iraqi federal government, particularly as both parties navigate complex issues around governance, economic cooperation, and resource management.
