Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani laid the foundation stone of the Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation Center in Erbil on Tuesday. In a special speech, he highlighted that the center aims to rehabilitate individuals and help reintegrate them into society. It also serves as an initiative to raise awareness of the dangers, consequences, and disasters of drug abuse.

“While we must confront the mafia and drug traffickers in the strongest possible way and punish them severely, we must distinguish between the criminal traffickers and those who, unfortunately, become victims, addicted to drugs for various reasons,” he said.

The Prime Minister thanked the security agencies of the Kurdistan Region for their efforts in combating this terrible phenomenon. “Unfortunately, this issue has been growing, and we see daily media campaigns about the arrest of some businessmen. The phenomenon has spread to the point where it has become a daily headline.”

“Today, we are laying the foundation stone for a very important project: the Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation Center. I would like to congratulate the Barzani Charitable Foundation and LDS for building this important center, and I hope it will be completed within the stipulated time and made available to treat drug patients and addicts,” added Prime Minister Barzani.

During his speech, he also acknowledged the LDS organization for its 10 years of collaboration with the Barzani Charitable Foundation in supporting their charitable work. “I hope their support and friendship with the Barzani Charitable Foundation will continue, God willing.”

“The fight against drugs is a very important issue for the Kurdistan Regional Government, which is working extensively and comprehensively to eradicate and confront this problem, as it poses a dangerous threat to our society. It causes significant damage to our health, social, economic, and security systems. Most importantly, it weakens our youth and their potential. We are determined to prevent the further spread of this great threat,” concluded the Prime Minister.
