During a prominent visit to Washington, D.C., Prime Minister Masrour Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s dedication to deepening its relationship with the United States, emphasizing shared democratic values and the pursuit of economic collaboration.

Throughout his official engagements in the U.S. capital, PM Barzani highlighted the growing partnership between Erbil and Washington. In a statement posted on X, he noted, “We are enhancing the already strong ties between Kurdistan and the United States, built on a foundation of mutual values and economic opportunity.”

This declaration coincided with the signing of two major energy agreements with American firms HKN Energy and WesternZagros. Together, the deals—worth more than $110 billion over their projected lifespans—are aimed at developing the Miran and Topkhana-Kurdamir gas fields in Sulaymaniyah province. These strategic projects are expected to significantly enhance the Kurdistan Region’s natural gas output, strengthening both energy security and economic development.

During his visit, Barzani met with senior U.S. officials, including members of Congress and representatives from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Talks centered on expanding economic ties, boosting energy cooperation, and reinforcing a shared commitment to regional peace and stability. Barzani emphasized that the partnership with the U.S. extends beyond economics—it reflects a broader, enduring alliance rooted in mutual interests.

The newly signed agreements are a clear signal of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) intent to draw in international investment and modernize its energy infrastructure. Barzani pointed out that such efforts are central to the KRG’s broader “Runaki” initiative, which includes the ambitious goal of delivering uninterrupted electricity across the region by 2026.

These milestones represent a pivotal moment for the Kurdistan Region’s energy strategy. PM Barzani’s visit, alongside the landmark deals, reflects a deliberate and strategic push to strengthen global partnerships and support long-term economic resilience. The bolstered relationship with the United States is expected to be a key driver in the region’s continued progress and stability.
