The student Khudeda Ziad Shamo Al-Hamo Basha, the first Ezidi to earn a Master’s degree in Human Rights Law from the University of Mosul, successfully defended his thesis entitled “Remedies for Crimes of Enslavement and Sexual Slavery in Non-International Armed Conflicts – The Ezidi Case” at the Faculty of Law.
The thesis addressed the serious violations suffered by the Ezidi community, particularly Ezidi women and girls in 2014 at the hands of the terrorist organization ISIS, by examining the conceptual and legal frameworks of the crimes of enslavement and sexual slavery. It also highlighted efforts to document these violations, the available and proposed remedies for victims, and the challenges that hinder the achievement of justice and their redress.
The research further aimed to analyze the international and national legal frameworks criminalizing these acts, assess the effectiveness of judicial accountability mechanisms in delivering justice for victims, identify shortcomings in both international and national responses, and propose recommendations to enhance justice, repair harm, and prevent the recurrence of such violations in the future.
It is worth noting that Khudeda Ziad Shamo Al-Hamo Basha is originally from Qahtaniya (Tal Azir) in Sinjar and obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Law at University of Duhok during the period of displacement.
