Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, affirmed in a statement today (March 5, 2026), on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Kurdistan People’s Uprising, that the region “will always remain a key pillar of safety and peace and will not be part of any conflict or military escalation that threatens the lives and security of our citizens.”

The full statement is as follows:

Today, we proudly commemorate the 35th anniversary of the great March 1991 Uprising. On this occasion, I extend my warmest congratulations to the families of the noble martyrs, to the heroic Peshmerga, and to all the people of Kurdistan at home and abroad. Our greetings and peace go to the pure souls of the martyrs of the uprising and all the martyrs of Kurdistan.

The uprising was a historic turning point and a decisive response by the Kurdish people in rejecting injustice and tyranny while striving for freedom and dignity. This blessed anniversary comes at a time when the region is experiencing highly complex and sensitive circumstances. Rising tensions and the negative consequences of conflicts place a major responsibility on all of us to preserve the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.

On this anniversary, we reaffirm that the Kurdistan Region will always remain a key pillar of safety and peace and will not be part of any conflict or military escalation that threatens the lives and security of our citizens. Protecting the Kurdistan Region’s existence and our constitutional gains can only be achieved through unity, cohesion, and the shared national responsibility of all political forces and components of Kurdistan.

Let this anniversary serve as a motivation to overcome challenges and strengthen a culture of coexistence and tolerance. Honoring the blood of the martyrs requires that we work hand in hand to protect stability and build a better future for our coming generations.

Greetings on the anniversary of the uprising.

Safety and stability to Kurdistan.
