The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, emphasized that the historic March 11 Agreement was not merely a national gain, but a correct and exemplary roadmap for consolidating peace and coexistence in Iraq, stressing that unity and cohesion among the Kurdish parties remain the only guarantee for protecting the federal entity.

In a statement issued today, Wednesday, March 11, 2026, on the anniversary of the historic agreement, Barzani said:

“Today we proudly commemorate the 56th anniversary of the historic March 11, 1970 Agreement. Achieved under the leadership of the immortal Barzani and the glorious September Revolution, this agreement was the greatest political and legal achievement. It entered modern history as the first official document recognizing the rights of the people of Kurdistan and became the foundation for all subsequent gains in the Kurdistan Region. On this anniversary, we bow in honor to the pure souls of the martyrs and salute the fighters and heroic Peshmerga.”

He added: “The March 11 Agreement was not just a national gain, but a correct and exemplary roadmap for consolidating peace and coexistence in Iraq. History has proven that the Iraqi authorities’ later retreat from this agreement, and their reliance on force rather than dialogue, led the country into war, destruction, instability, and waste of human and material resources—a cost Iraq still pays to this day.”

Barzani noted that while commemorating this anniversary, the region continues to face complex challenges and risks of escalating conflicts and wars. “These difficult circumstances remind all parties to act with sensitivity and responsibility, resolve problems peacefully, and prevent further escalation of war and complications. In Iraq, we must heed history and recognize that stability is achieved by accepting others, consolidating the federal system, and upholding justice.”

“On this anniversary, we reaffirm the unity and cohesion among Kurdish parties as the sole guarantee for protecting the federal entity, our achievements, and our constitutional rights. Let us work together to keep Kurdistan and Iraq away from the dangers of war and build a brighter, more prosperous future filled with peace for coming generations.”

Tribute to the memory of March 11 and the pure souls of the martyrs.
