The novel Echo of Two Faces is the latest literary work by Ezidi writer Ali Hussein Al-Huwairee, recently published by Jasad Publishing House. The novel adds a new dimension to contemporary Iraqi narrative, focusing on the deep psychological aftermath of war rather than its visible destruction.

Between the shock of loss and the labyrinth of psychological escape, Echo of Two Faces reveals that war does not end with the silence of cannons, but begins when its shrapnel settles within the human soul. Through a cinematic narrative style that follows suspended glances and neglected corners, Al-Huwairee portrays a protagonist torn between two identities: the face of the past and the face of brokenness.

The novel avoids illusion and instead delves into the wounds of the “survivor,” who struggles to piece together a fragmented self amid war basements, displacement camps, and university corridors—spaces that transform into mirrors of the inner psyche. With evocative yet economical language, the work poses a haunting question: Is survival the end of suffering, or the beginning of a deeper pain?

The significance of this novel lies in its ability to transform tragedy into a vivid, almost visual narrative that engages themes of identity and self-reconstruction. It leaves a lingering resonance, whispering to the reader that the fiercest battles are often those fought within, long after everyone else has gone.

Ali Hussein Al-Huwairee is from the town of Bashiqa. He is a lecturer at Al-Hamdaniya University in Nineveh Province and a PhD candidate specializing in the novel. He has previously published another novel several years ago.
