“The late Archbishop made important contributions—working alongside Kurdistan Regional Government institutions—to support displaced Christians who sought refuge in Kurdistan from the atrocities committed by ISIS terrorists,” Barzani stated.

On Thursday, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani extended his condolences over the passing of Archbishop Mar Paul Thabet Habib, the Chaldean bishop of the Alqosh Diocese.

In a message addressed to Cardinal Mar Louis Raphaël I Sako, Patriarch of the Chaldean Church, Barzani conveyed his sympathy to the late bishop’s family, the Chaldean community, and all Christians across the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani highlighted the Archbishop’s vital contributions, noting that he worked closely with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) institutions to support displaced Christians who sought safety in Kurdistan during the ISIS onslaught.

He offered prayers for the bishop’s soul and expressed his condolences to his loved ones and the broader community.

The Chaldean Christian population in Kurdistan and Iraq has endured significant challenges, especially during the rise of ISIS. Figures like Archbishop Thabet Habib played a crucial role in providing both spiritual guidance and humanitarian aid during those difficult times.
