President Nechirvan Barzani’s Statement on the 11th Anniversary of the Ezidi Genocide

Seme

Today, we solemnly mark the painful 11th anniversary of the genocide committed against the Ezidis. We honor and remember the victims of the heinous crimes committed by ISIS, and we reaffirm our full commitment to supporting our Ezidi citizens. Despite all the pain, we look to the future with hope and work together to heal their wounds.

It is deeply distressing and concerning that eleven years have passed, yet nearly half of the Ezidi population still lives in camps, facing dire economic, social, and psychological conditions. It is the duty of the Iraqi government to pay greater attention to its Ezidi citizens, compensate them, and prevent Sinjar and the Ezidi homeland from remaining a battleground for militias, armed groups, and regional agendas.

Trust, peace, safety, reconstruction, and essential services must be restored to Sinjar and other Ezidi areas. Justice must be served for the Ezidis, and the criminals must be held accountable. We reiterate the need to implement the Sinjar Agreement signed between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government of Iraq to stabilize and protect the area. We also call on the international community to provide the Ezidis with full support in every possible way.

We express our gratitude to all the countries that have recognized the mass killing of the Ezidis as genocide, and we will continue our efforts to ensure broader international recognition. We thank and appreciate the support of the international coalition in defeating ISIS.

To our Ezidi brothers and sisters: we assure you that we remain your protectors, and our office will continue to work tirelessly to free the abducted and uncover the fate of all missing persons—as long as even one Ezidi remains missing.

Glory to the memory of the Ezidi victims, to the unbreakable will and resilience of the Ezidi people.
Honor to the memory of the heroic Peshmerga who, under the leadership of President Masoud Barzani, gave their lives for the liberation of Sinjar and all the components of Kurdistan and Iraq.

Nechirvan Barzani
President of the Kurdistan Region
