On Wednesday, Ezidi MP Vian Dakhil revealed that she has filed a lawsuit before the Karkh Investigative Court in Baghdad against a man named Hisham Al-Shammari for insulting the Ezidi community.
In a video statement, Dakhil said the lawsuit was based on Article 372 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which criminalizes “contempt of religions,” after Al-Shammari posted an offensive comment against the Ezidi faith.
Dakhil added: “We will no longer remain silent, we will no longer fear, and we will not be satisfied with mere condemnation. The tragedy will not be repeated. We have full confidence in the just judiciary to take deterrent legal measures against anyone who dares to spread extremist ideas and harm the authentic Ezidi religion.”
Meanwhile, Hisham Al-Shammari issued an apology in a video to the Ezidi community, confirming his readiness to appear before the Iraqi judiciary to receive the appropriate punishment.
