Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, congratulated President Barzani, the heroic Peshmerga, the families of the martyrs, and the people of Kurdistan on the anniversary of the Kurdistan Referendum.

Below is the text of the message:

The anniversary of the referendum — the day of the brave decision by the people of Kurdistan, the day of our nation’s will triumphing, the day of hope. Congratulations to President Masoud Barzani, the families of the martyrs, the heroic Peshmerga, and the resilient people of Kurdistan.

The decision to hold the referendum was made on June 7, 2017, when Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani — then President of the Kurdistan Region — held a broad meeting in Erbil to determine the date of the independence referendum. The meeting included government officials, representatives of political parties and forces, as well as officials from the Independent High Electoral and Referendum Commission in the Kurdistan Region. During the meeting, the date of the referendum was set for September 25, 2017.

The result was a landslide in favor of independence, with more than 93% of participants voting yes to independence.
