In a phone interview with Mr. Sarhan Issa, the official spokesperson of the Yazidi Council of Syria and a member of the Yazidi delegation that recently visited Damascus, to discuss the details of their visit, Issa stated that the delegation held a series of important meetings with prominent leaders of Editorial board al-Sham in both Damascus and Aleppo.

Issa explained that the meetings focused on demanding the protection of Yazidis in Syria and treating them as an indigenous group with a rich and deeply rooted history in the country. The discussions also called for the inclusion of Yazidi rights explicitly in the Syrian constitution to ensure a secure and stable future for them. He pointed out that the leaders they met with showed a great deal of understanding of these demands, reflecting a positive atmosphere and the possibility of achieving practical steps in this regard.

Furthermore, Issa revealed that the delegation held important meetings with representatives of other Syrian communities, including Christians, Druze, Alawites, and others, to discuss the general situation in Syria and the status of religious and ethnic groups, particularly under the new government. The discussions emphasized the importance of cooperation between all communities to ensure justice, equality, and the preservation of Syria’s cultural and religious diversity.

It is worth noting that this is the first time in modern Syrian history that a Yazidi delegation has been received by the ruling authority to discuss their issues and listen to their demands.

This step comes as part of ongoing efforts by the Yazidis and other communities to strengthen their presence and protect their rights in the process of rebuilding Syria.
