The Health website highlighted behaviors that may indicate a narcissistic personality—one that prioritizes self-love at the expense of others.
According to the website, narcissistic behavior does not necessarily mean someone has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) but may suggest an unhealthy level of self-admiration. It can also involve a strong desire to compete, always win, or manipulate others to get what one wants.
Here are some behaviors that could indicate narcissism:
1. You Love Being the Center of Attention
Exaggerating or fabricating achievements to impress others is a key sign of narcissism. These “small white lies” serve a bigger purpose—creating a perfect image to mask the fear of not being good enough.
2. You Give Unsolicited Advice
You might recommend the best restaurants or parenting tips, but the problem is how you do it—implying that you know better than everyone else. Studies show narcissists have a superiority complex and tend to express inflated self-worth at others’ expense.
3. You Hate Waiting in Line
Narcissists feel entitled and expect the world to revolve around them. You may get frustrated when someone doesn’t respond to your messages immediately because you believe you deserve special treatment—whether among friends, family, or at work.
4. Your Ambition Knows No Limits
Working hard for your dreams is one thing, but assuming you’re special without reason is another. Narcissists believe they are inherently unique and part of an elite group that deserves only the best. They prefer to associate with high-status individuals and may belittle those they consider beneath them.
5. You Know How to Charm Others
You have a talent for making people feel special, but this admiration comes with an unspoken deal: you expect them to boost your self-esteem in return. This manipulative charm is a common narcissistic trait.
6. Winning Is a Must
Narcissists must win in every aspect of life—losing is not an option. This compulsive need to win makes it difficult for them to celebrate others’ successes.
7. You Hold Grudges Against Successful People
Instead of processing hurt feelings, narcissists react with anger and seek revenge. They may insult, belittle, or intimidate others whenever possible.
8. You Never Take the Blame
If you acknowledge your mistakes, apologize, and try to make things right, you’re probably not a narcissist. In contrast, narcissists immediately shift blame onto others and lack empathy—a defining trait of NPD.
9. You Exploit Others
Manipulation is another hallmark of narcissism. Even if it’s unintentional, you may use people to serve your interests—bullying or deceiving them to get what you want.
10. You Constantly Seek Validation
Narcissists crave what is known as narcissistic supply—a mix of attention, admiration, excitement, and even conflict—to maintain their self-esteem.
