Vian Dakhil: The return of Sinjar’s displaced requires the provision of basic services and the Kurdistan Regional Government is the only supporter

Vian Dakhil, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) bloc in the Iraqi Parliament, emphasized that the return of displaced persons (IDPs) to their areas—particularly to Sinjar (Shingal)—is contingent upon the provision of basic services. She stressed that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is the only authority that has offered tangible support to the Ezidi community, while the federal government has failed to take any meaningful action.

In a press conference held on Thursday (September 4, 2025), Dakhil stated that although the Iraqi Parliament is making efforts to facilitate the return of IDPs, this return “first and foremost requires the reconstruction of schools, hospitals, and public infrastructure in Sinjar, as well as the provision of electricity and clean water.” She added: “We cannot send people back to live among the ruins of destroyed buildings.”

Dakhil also underlined the importance of implementing the Sinjar Agreement, describing it as fundamental to restoring stability and returning normal life to the area.

The KDP bloc spokesperson reaffirmed the KRG’s continued support for Sinjar, noting that the regional government regularly sends medical teams, surgeons, and specialized personnel to assist Ezidi families and provide aid.

In contrast, Dakhil strongly criticized the federal government’s stance, saying:
“The only party that continues to support us is the Kurdistan Regional Government. The Iraqi government has done nothing for the Yazidis so far.”
