Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has reiterated his commitment to promoting the use of bicycles and maintaining environmental cleanliness in the Kurdistan Region.
On Thursday, July 11, 2024, a significant meeting was held under the chairmanship of Omed Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, and attended by Dr. Sarbaz Sheikh Najib, Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masoud Karash, Deputy Governor, as well as the central district’s traffic and roads officials and a substantial number of engineers.
The conference focused on the construction of a dedicated cycling path in Erbil.
According to the governor’s statement, Prime Minister Barzani strongly supported the project, emphasizing its environmental benefits for Erbil province.
The initiative is expected to mitigate the effects of climate change, increase urban greenery, and reduce emissions from vehicles.
A specialized engineering advisory committee has been established in Erbil to oversee the project.
During the meeting, the committee presented detailed plans and discussed the implementation process in a seminar format, addressing all relevant aspects of the project.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of leveraging the experiences of Paris, a sister city of Erbil, and the Netherlands, renowned for its extensive bicycle infrastructure, to guide the project.
With Erbil’s circular city layout deemed suitable for such an initiative, preparations are underway, and upon finalizing details and incorporating feedback, the cycling path project will commence implementation.
