Masrour Barzani, Deputy President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), met on Monday with senior party leaders and organizational cadres in Erbil to discuss recent political developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the broader region.
During the meeting, Barzani addressed current political challenges facing the Kurdistan Region, stressing that the Region should never be perceived as a source of instability or conflict. On the contrary, he underlined, it must continue to serve as a cornerstone of peace and stability in the Middle East.
He commended the pivotal role played by President Masoud Barzani in fostering unity among Kurdish groups—especially in the Kurdish areas of Syria—and in encouraging dialogue and reconciliation efforts in Turkey through the peace process with the Kurdish movement.
Regarding relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government in Baghdad, Barzani pointed out that the core of the disagreements is political, not technical. “Regrettably, Baghdad’s treatment of the Kurdistan Region remains unfair, discriminatory, and in violation of the constitution,” he remarked.
He reaffirmed that Iraq is a federal country, and that the Kurdistan Region holds a constitutionally enshrined status that must be upheld. “The Region will never give up any of its constitutional entitlements,” he stated firmly.
Barzani also noted that a KRG delegation is currently in Baghdad working to resolve the salary crisis affecting the people of Kurdistan, expressing hope for a swift and fair resolution.
Reiterating the KDP’s central mission, Barzani stated, “Under President Barzani’s leadership, the KDP stands as the primary guardian of the Kurdish people’s legitimate rights and aspirations, as well as the constitutional position of the Region. A stronger KDP equates to a stronger Kurdistan. With the support of God and our patriotic citizens, our party will continue moving forward with determination and vision.”
