President Masoud Barzani published a message today, Monday, March 16, 2026, on the platform X, marking the 38th anniversary of the chemical bombardment of Halabja.
Text of President Barzani’s message:
“The chemical bombardment of Halabja was an extremely horrific injustice and a heinous crime against the people of Kurdistan. There is no other place in the world where a state has exterminated its own citizens with chemical weapons except in Iraq, where this grave crime was committed against the people of Kurdistan.
Despite this brutal crime, there are still chauvinistic individuals in Iraq who oppose the rights of the people of Kurdistan. The tragedy of Halabja and other crimes of the past represent a historical and legal responsibility for Iraq, obliging it to compensate the people of Kurdistan.
On this anniversary, we send peace and salutations to the pure souls of the martyrs of Halabja and all the martyrs of Kurdistan.”
