The Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced the completion of all technical preparations for 18 additional mass graves containing the remains of victims of ISIS in the Sinjar district (Shingal), paving the way for the launch of exhumation and excavation operations in coordination and cooperation with the federal government in Baghdad.
In this regard, Aram Nouri, Director of Mass Graves at the ministry, revealed on Friday, October 30, 2026, that an official delegation from the Kurdistan Region is expected to travel to Baghdad early next week to agree on fieldwork mechanisms and establish a timeline for launching joint operations involving specialized teams from both sides.
Nouri explained that the mass graves targeted in this phase contain the remains of victims of the genocide and crimes committed by ISIS against the Ezidi community during its August 2014 invasion of the region.
He stressed that government efforts to collect DNA samples from victims’ families will continue to ensure the identification of the victims and their dignified reburial through official ceremonies that honor their sacrifices.
