Sardar Sheikh Yahya: Strategic and Development Projects Underway in Shekhan with Full Support from the Kurdistan Regional Government

Sema

Sardar Sheikh Yahya, the district commissioner of Shekhan, emphasized the significant importance of the newly inaugurated Lalish event halls, describing the project as a vital step for all components of the district. He highlighted the key role of the Lalish Cultural and Social Center, which functions simultaneously as a cultural, religious, administrative, and social institution that strengthens community harmony and coexistence.

In an exclusive statement to Sema TV, Sheikh Yahya noted that since its establishment, the center’s staff have played a major role in enhancing cultural awareness and fostering social cohesion. He expressed deep gratitude to the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, H.E. Mr. Masrour Barzani, for his unwavering support and for allocating a dedicated budget to improve infrastructure and services in Shekhan.

He further revealed that several major service and infrastructure projects are currently underway across the district’s towns and villages, with a total investment exceeding 21 billion IQD. These include:

• A dual carriageway connecting Shekhan and Baadre to Duhok

• The development of the road linking Shekhan to the Lalish temple

These strategic projects are being implemented under the direct supervision of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

While acknowledging some contributions from the federal government, Sheikh Yahya pointed out that they fall short of expectations. He stressed that, legally and morally, the federal government bears responsibility for the region’s development in accordance with the federal budget approved by the Iraqi Parliament. Unfortunately, the level of commitment and support has not met the required standards.

He concluded by reaffirming that the ongoing progress and project implementation in Shekhan have been made possible primarily through the support of the Kurdistan Regional Government, meeting the urgent needs of local communities.
