Kurdistan Democratic Party Urges Baghdad to Respond Swiftly to Drone Attacks on Kurdistan Region

Sema

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) bloc is pressing the federal government to take immediate and firm measures to stop ongoing drone strikes targeting the Kurdistan Region’s energy infrastructure. The bloc warns that these attacks endanger both Iraq’s sovereignty and its economic stability. The KDP is calling for accountability, an emergency session of Parliament, and international assistance to protect vital facilities and ensure stability across the region.

KDP Demands Swift Federal and International Action After Intensified Drone Attacks on Kurdistan’s Energy Infrastructure

On Thursday, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc issued a strong appeal to the Iraqi federal government, urging it to uphold its constitutional duties by taking immediate and firm steps to end the rising wave of drone attacks on critical infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region. The call follows a series of alarming aerial assaults on oil and energy facilities that pose a serious threat to Iraq’s sovereignty, economic foundation, and regional stability.

Wave of Drone Attacks Hits Strategic Energy Installations

In recent days, the Kurdistan Region has endured multiple drone strikes that have disrupted essential infrastructure. The Region’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate reported that on Thursday, an explosive-laden drone crashed in Jezhnikan village in Erbil’s Bahirka district. Although the incident caused no casualties or damage, earlier strikes had more serious consequences.

On Wednesday evening, a drone attack targeted the Hunt Oil site in Duhok province’s Baadre subdistrict at 7:10 p.m.—the second strike on the same location in just a few days. The Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed the attack resulted in material damage, though no injuries were reported.

The ministry strongly condemned these attacks, characterizing them as “terrorist acts,” and warned of the dangers they pose to civilians and oil sector personnel. The ministry called for prompt intervention by both the Iraqi government and the international community to defend energy facilities and prevent further escalation.

KDP Bloc Calls for Accountability and Emergency Parliamentary Session

In a formal statement, the KDP bloc highlighted the gravity of these attacks, especially amid ongoing economic challenges in the Kurdistan Region. The bloc emphasized that these assaults represent a dangerous escalation, directly threatening Iraq’s sovereignty and internal stability.

“These actions show the attackers’ complete disregard for national unity and public welfare, driven instead by questionable motives,” the statement noted.

The KDP demanded that the federal government identify those responsible and bring them to justice. The bloc also called for an emergency session in Parliament to assess the government’s response and to coordinate efforts aimed at ending the attacks.

Expanding Strikes Disrupt Oil Production Across Erbil, Duhok, and Zakho

The drone campaign has rapidly widened in scope. On Wednesday morning alone, the Hunt Oil site in Baadre was attacked again at 7:14 a.m. Earlier that same day, two drones hit the DNO oil field in the Fishkhabour area between 6:00 and 6:15 a.m., while a third drone struck the Tawkê area of Zakho at 7:00 a.m. Although these incidents caused only material damage, they severely impacted oil production.

Facilities in Khormala, Sarsing, Ayn Sifni, and other areas in Erbil and Duhok provinces have also been targeted, resulting in what the Ministry of Natural Resources described as “major material losses” and significant disruption to output.

Urgent Plea for Protection and National Responsibility

The KDP’s appeal echoes repeated requests from Kurdistan Regional Government officials for Baghdad and international stakeholders to intervene.

“Safeguarding the Kurdistan Region’s vital energy infrastructure must be seen as a national imperative,” the KDP bloc asserted. “Iraq’s unity, security, and economic future depend on halting these attacks and ensuring those behind them are held accountable.”
