Iraq begins the electoral silence period ahead of the special and general voting

Iraq entered a nationwide electoral silence on Saturday, marking the final calm before both special and general voting begin for the country’s sixth parliamentary elections, set for next Tuesday.

The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced Friday that the silence period officially commenced at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, ahead of special voting on Sunday and general voting on Tuesday, as Iraq braces for one of its most significant political milestones in recent years.

In a directive to political alliances, parties, and candidates, the IHEC underscored that electoral silence entails a total suspension of all campaigning and promotional activities meant to sway voters. During this time, campaign events, advertisements, and media endorsements are strictly forbidden.

The commission further noted that media organizations may only provide information about the voting process and encourage public participation, without favoring any candidate or political group.

“The purpose of the electoral silence,” the IHEC stated, “is to create a calm, neutral atmosphere that allows voters to make informed and independent decisions.”

The official campaign period, which began on October 3, 2025, concluded early Saturday with the start of the silence phase. The commission previously approved 7,768 candidates—both men and women—vying for 329 parliamentary seats across the nation.

Millions of Iraqis are expected to cast their votes amid tight security and widespread anticipation. Sunday’s special voting will include security personnel, Peshmerga forces, and other eligible groups, while the general public will vote two days later.

As Iraq enters this crucial quiet phase, attention now turns to the upcoming days, when citizens will choose the new parliament and set the direction for the country’s political future.
