On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, the Kurdistan Region issues postage stamps in six languages

Sema

On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, the Ministry of Transport and Communications – Kurdistan Regional Government announced the issuance of six official postage stamps on February 21.

The stamps reflect the region’s historical and present-day linguistic diversity, featuring Kurdish, Arabic, Turkmen, Syriac, and Armenian, in addition to English as an international language of identification.

According to the statement, the issuance is not merely a postal measure, but rather “a document of identity and a cultural ambassador” that reflects the Region’s vision of safeguarding pluralism. It stressed that these languages represent deep-rooted components of Kurdistan’s national fabric, not minority languages on the margins of history.

The statement also highlighted that the Kurdistan Regional Government has translated this belief in diversity into institutional policies, including the establishment of general directorates for Syriac and Turkmen education and culture, as well as the opening of dozens of schools teaching in these languages alongside Kurdish and Arabic—reinforcing the principles of equality and mutual respect among all components.
