Bashik District Set to Become Tenth District in Nineveh Province

In a significant development for the Nineveh province, Bashik district is slated to be established as its tenth district, pending approval from the Nineveh Provincial Council. This decision follows an official request from Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani, emphasizing the potential for enhanced local governance and service provision in the region.

Ghazwan Hamid, the governor of Bashik district, confirmed to Sama TV on July 16, 2024, that Prime Minister Sudani’s letter formally initiated the process. However, he noted that the implementation hinges on the Provincial Council’s approval, which presents a current procedural hurdle.

Located 12 kilometers east of Mosul in the Nineveh Plain, Bashik district is home to a diverse population including Arabs, Kurds, Christians, and Shabaks. The prospect of district status promises increased local autonomy and a boost in essential services, addressing long-standing community needs.

The establishment of Bashik as a district could pave the way for other communities to also seek district status, envisioning greater service accessibility for the region,” remarked the district governor, underscoring the potential benefits of this administrative upgrade.

As discussions continue within the Nineveh Provincial Council, residents and local stakeholders eagerly anticipate the potential transformation that district status could bring to Bashik and its surrounding areas.
