From Qadia to Darkare: Fires Renew Fears Over IDP Camp Safety

Sema

In less than 72 hours, two separate fires erupted in IDP camps in the Kurdistan Region, reigniting deep concerns about safety conditions and government negligence toward displaced populations.

The first incident occurred in Qadia Camp, where a large blaze destroyed more than 10 caravans, leaving several Ezidi families homeless once again. Hours later, a second fire broke out in Darkarī Camp, burning three additional caravans. While no human casualties were reported in either case, the material losses were considerable.

Speaking on the issue, Member of Parliament Dr. Vian Dakhil criticized the federal authorities, stating:

“These are no longer isolated accidents — they reflect a serious and ongoing failure to provide even the most basic safety and human dignity in these camps.”

Dr. Dakhil emphasized that the federal government and the Ministry of Migration and Displacement bear full responsibility for the repeated tragedies.

She called for a comprehensive and permanent solution rather than temporary or symbolic measures.

Despite the alarming nature of the incidents, she also praised the swift intervention of Civil Defense teams, whose timely response helped prevent more devastating outcomes.

“These people have suffered enough,” she said. “They deserve secure and dignified living conditions — not fragile shelters that can go up in flames with the strike of a spark.”

With summer temperatures rising and infrastructure in many camps deteriorating, humanitarian voices are once again urging the Iraqi authorities to take action before the next tragedy strikes.
