Deteriorating Security Conditions and Lack of Basic Services Prevent the Return of Sinjar’s Displaced People to Their Homes

Sema

Years after the ISIS invasion of Sinjar in 2014, thousands of Ezidis remain displaced, unable to return to their ancestral lands. Despite the liberation of the region, worsening security conditions, armed group tensions, and the lack of coordination between local and federal authorities continue to hinder stability in the area.

Moreover, the absence of basic services — including water, electricity, healthcare, and education — leaves the region uninhabitable for most families. Many of the displaced communities are living in camps in the Kurdistan Region under harsh conditions, waiting for real steps to ensure their safe and dignified return.

Local leaders and international organizations have repeatedly called for the implementation of the Sinjar Agreement and for increased efforts to rebuild infrastructure, ensure civilian protection, and restore governance. Until such measures are taken, the dream of returning home remains out of reach for thousands of Sinjar’s original residents.
