Petrichor Organization for Human Rights, a group dedicated to collecting statistics and defending human rights in the Sinjar district of northwestern Iraq, has released updated statistics on Ezidi martyrs who were killed by ISIS terrorists during their attack on Sinjar on August 3, 2014.
In a statement, the organization said:
“As part of our ongoing commitment to documenting the truth and seeking justice for the victims of the genocide committed against the Ezidi community, we present below the number of victims whose remains have been handed over to their families after DNA identification by the Department of Forensic Medicine. These are part of the ongoing process of exhuming and identifying remains from mass and individual graves in Sinjar.”
Official statistics of identified and formally buried martyrs:
- On 6/2/2021, the remains of 104 martyrs were handed over
- On 9/12/2021, the remains of 42 martyrs
- On 24/10/2022, the remains of 16 martyrs
- On 20/6/2023, the remains of 39 martyrs
- On 22/1/2024, the remains of 41 martyrs
- On 21/2/2025, the remains of 32 martyrs
Total identified and buried as of now: 274 martyrs
The organization emphasized:
“These numbers reflect only a portion of the atrocity committed against the Ezidis. Dozens of mass graves are still waiting to be opened, and hundreds of remains exhumed since March 15, 2019, are still awaiting DNA testing and official burial.”
The organization added that it remains committed to:
- Opening all remaining mass grave sites
- Completing DNA matching
- Officially handing over remains to the families
- Compensating affected families
- Holding perpetrators accountable
It is worth noting that around 500 martyrs have yet to be identified, although their remains have already been recovered from mass graves across Sinjar.
