Sharif Suleiman: We need independent historians to rewrite the true history of the Ezidi community

In a special statement to Sema TV, Kurdistan Parliament Member Sharif Suleiman expressed his deep appreciation to the Governor of Duhok, Dr. Ali Tatar, for his valuable initiative, which reflects a sincere interest in promoting knowledge and culture—particularly concerning the Iraqi national library as well as Kurdish and public libraries in general.

Suleiman emphasized the urgent need to enrich these libraries with real research and credible publications that explore the overlooked and undocumented histories of indigenous communities in the region, especially the Ezidi community. He stated:

“We need independent historians who write with integrity and a sense of responsibility—historians who can tell the real story of the Ezidis without distortion or marginalization. This community has suffered for centuries from injustice, neglect, and deliberate erasure.”

He added:

“Unfortunately, history is often written by kings, sultans, and the victors. And for over 1,400 years, we’ve lived in a state of conflict, decline, and defeat. I don’t want to dwell on the past—it’s gone. But we must study it with accuracy and document it with honesty, especially when it concerns ancient communities like the Ezidis.”

Suleiman concluded by stressing that the Ezidis, as a deeply rooted and historic component of this land, deserve to have their history documented fairly and scientifically—as part of a national effort to restore justice to all marginalized communities.
