Syrian Arab Army (SAA) forces and allied groups have besieged the Kurdish city of Kobani, cutting off access to aid, electricity, water, and internet, triggering a severe humanitarian emergency. Local sources report that the blockade has isolated residents and thousands of displaced people amid heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.
Mustafa Sheikh Muslim, a lawyer in Kobani, told Kurdistan24 that conditions are at their worst, with humanitarian aid effectively blocked despite no official ban. Shelling continued until Friday noon, and although attacks later slowed on one front, the overall situation remains unstable.
Basic services have collapsed, and critical supplies such as fuel, medicine, and baby formula are rapidly running out. The crisis is worsened by the arrival of thousands of displaced Kurds from Tal Samen, Ain Issa, Raqqa, and Girê Spî, overwhelming already limited resources.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights warned of a “major humanitarian disaster,” citing the siege and what it described as international silence. With surrounding villages also blockaded, Kobani now depends entirely on outside help, which is currently being blocked.
As the siege continues, the risk of a catastrophic loss of life grows daily.
