Ezidi quota representative in the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Khalid Saido, announced on Monday evening that Speaker Hiyab al-Halbousi rejected a proposal aimed at securing the rights of Ezidis, Feyli Kurds, Christians, and Sabians in parliamentary committees, despite the proposal having been approved by his two deputies. Saido called for reconsideration of the decision to protect minority rights and maintain national balance within the parliament.
The announcement was made during a press conference held by Saido at the parliament building.
Saido explained that the proposal, submitted on February 9 by representatives of the minorities (Christian, Ezidi, Sabian, and Feyli Kurdish), suggested amending Article 72 of the parliamentary internal regulations. It would allow minority representatives to nominate themselves for membership or chairmanship of committees, with committee selections reflecting the exclusive choice of the minority representative. The proposal also granted minority representatives the right to join additional committees, including: Migration and Displaced Affairs, Endowments, Tribes, and the Committee on Martyrs and Political Prisoners.
Sido expressed surprise at the speaker’s stance, noting: “Although the proposal received approval from the First Deputy Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, we were surprised by the rejection from the Speaker, ignoring his deputies’ consent, which clearly marginalizes the minorities.”
The Iraqi Parliament is currently holding its 12th session, which, according to the agenda reviewed by Sema Agency, includes the swearing-in of several substitute MPs, voting on permanent committee members, and opening general discussions.
