Unfulfilled Promises: A Year After the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Visit to Shingal

Sema

On this day, a year ago, on March 4, 2024, Mr. Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, the Prime Minister of Iraq in the federal government, visited the city of Sinjar for the first time in an official visit to follow up on Sinjar’s issues. He was received at the 20th Division of the Iraqi Army in Sinjar, with the presence of religious, cultural, social, and political figures from the region.

Yazidi activists from Sinjar stated that “the Prime Minister’s visit was filled with promises, such as the reconstruction of Sinjar, the return of displaced persons to their original areas, compensating the families, and fully resolving the displacement issue, especially rebuilding the new Kocho village. However, none of these promises have been implemented by the Iraqi government.”

In response to this, in a statement to SAMA Media Agency, Nineveh Provincial Council member Jamal Al-Shesho said in one sentence that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani’s visit to Sinjar a year ago was nothing more than “ink on paper.”

On August 3, 2014, as a result of ISIS’s attack on Sinjar and the genocide against the Yazidis, the issue of the Yazidis and the name of Sinjar echoed on the international level. More than 80% of Sinjar’s infrastructure was completely destroyed. For the past ten years, the Yazidis have been waiting for an end to their suffering, yet they continue to live in the pain of displacement and homelessness.
