Masrour Barzani highlighted that a core principle of the Gulan Revolution was the spirit of unity—marked by solidarity, collaboration, and a shared struggle among all Kurdish political and societal factions. He emphasized the importance of reviving and upholding these values in the current political landscape.
Masrour Barzani, Deputy President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), issued a heartfelt message commemorating the 49th anniversary of the Gulan Revolution, paying tribute to the revolutionaries, commanders, and Peshmerga fighters who bravely defended the people of Kurdistan.
In his statement, Barzani honored the memory of those who took part in the historic uprising, emphasizing the revolution’s role in shaping the Kurdish national struggle. “With deep respect and appreciation, we commemorate all the courageous fighters who participated in the Gulan Revolution and defended the people of Kurdistan with dignity and strong conviction,” he said.
Barzani underscored the Gulan Revolution as a continuation of the Aylul [September] Revolution, led by the late national leader, Mustafa Barzani, describing it as a pivotal movement that dismantled the plans of Kurdistan’s enemies. “Through sacrifice, persistence, and unrelenting resistance,” he noted, “the Gulan Revolution paved a new path forward for the people of Kurdistan.”
The Gulan Revolution, launched in May 1976, marked a significant resurgence in Kurdish resistance following the collapse of the Aylul [September] Revolution. It embodied the resilience of the Kurdish people and revived hopes for self-determination. The revolution laid the groundwork for the administrative uprising of 1991 and the eventual establishment of the Kurdistan Region’s autonomous institutions.
PM Barzani stressed that one of the fundamental values of the Gulan Revolution was unity—a spirit of cooperation, cohesion, and collective struggle among all Kurdish political and social forces. He called for renewed commitment to these ideals in today’s political climate.
“In remembering the Gulan Revolution, we reaffirm our belief in joint efforts and solidarity across all Kurdistani parties and groups. That unity was a cornerstone of the revolution and a key factor behind the success of the 1991 uprising and the achievements we enjoy today,” he said.
The statement also paid homage to the legacy of the late Mustafa Barzani and Idris Barzani, two of the revolution’s iconic figures, along with all the martyrs of Kurdistan. “We salute the pure souls of Barzani the Immortal, Idris Barzani, and all Kurdistan’s martyrs who remain eternal in our memory,” Barzani concluded.
The Gulan Revolution remains a defining chapter in modern Kurdish history, symbolizing endurance, sacrifice, and the enduring hope for freedom and self-governance.
