Al-Hassan also noted that “So far, 100,000 Ezidis are still living in camps across Iraq, unable to return to their homes due to the worsening conditions in their native areas.”

Mohamed al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), stressed on Tuesday the importance of enhancing cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil to resolve their differences in accordance with the Iraqi constitution.

His remarks were made during a UN Security Council session focused on the current situation in Iraq.

“Iraq today is very different from what it was two decades ago. Despite numerous challenges, the country has achieved a degree of security and stability,” al-Hassan said.

Speaking about the parliamentary elections, he highlighted that “The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission has made considerable strides, supported by UNAMI’s technical expertise, and is committed to ensuring free and transparent elections that include all Iraqi citizens.”

Al-Hassan further pointed out that “As of now, approximately 100,000 Ezidis remain displaced and are living in camps due to the ongoing instability in their home regions.”

He called on the Iraqi government to take swift and firm action by implementing a national strategy aimed at providing a long-term solution to the Ezidi issue and restoring their hope for a better future.

“The Ezidi community in Iraq has endured tremendous suffering,” he said. “I call on Iraq and neighboring countries to do everything necessary to protect them and support their return to their homes.”
