KDP Official: Stability in Sinjar Depends on Its Return to Kurdistan

KDP official Vian Dakhil stated that true stability in Sinjar cannot be achieved unless the district is brought back under the Kurdistan Region in line with Article 140, criticizing Baghdad for neglecting the Ezidi cause and for its failure to open mass graves.

A senior Kurdish lawmaker has stressed that lasting stability in Sinjar and other disputed Kurdistani areas will remain out of reach until they are formally returned to the administration of the Kurdistan Region under Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution, accusing Baghdad of neglecting the Ezidi cause.

Vian Dakhil, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) bloc in the Iraqi Parliament, told Kurdistan24 on Thursday that the future security of these territories is directly tied to resolving their constitutional status.

She criticized the federal government’s handling of the Ezidi tragedy, saying, “The Iraqi government is not taking the Ezidi case seriously. Because they are Kurds and Ezidis, they have faced multiple genocides.”

Dakhil emphasized that Baghdad has clear responsibilities toward survivors, including providing compensation, ensuring their safety, and meeting their demands to prevent future atrocities.

“Until Sinjar and the other Article 140 areas are returned to the Kurdistan Region, there will be no stability in these areas,” she asserted, contrasting the insecurity in disputed territories with the peace and safety Ezidis enjoy within the Kurdistan Region’s borders.

Highlighting federal inaction, she noted that 25 Ezidi mass graves remain unopened, with no serious efforts by Baghdad to exhume them—an issue that continues to deepen the wounds of the Ezidi community years after the genocide.
