The Ezidi Cultural House in Cologne and its surroundings has issued a statement regarding the federal interior minister’s decision to reject the adoption of a law protecting Ezidis in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) from deportation.
In a move that has sparked widespread concern within the Ezidi community, the organization expressed deep regret over the rejection of the protection law, which had been approved in October 2025 after more than two and a half years of efforts involving the Ezidi Cultural House, the Ministry of Integration, and several democratic party representatives. The law had represented real hope for thousands of Ezidis at risk of deportation to Iraq.
The statement noted that the rejection reflects the continuation of strict asylum policies that fail to take into account the unique humanitarian and historical suffering of Ezidis, increasing anxiety and instability among many families.
It emphasized ongoing efforts and communications with decision-makers at both the state and federal levels to seek fair and just solutions, while also praising the stance of NRW’s Minister of Integration, who supports halting the deportation of Ezidis.
The organization warned against practices that could negatively affect the legal status of refugees, particularly traveling to the country of origin using asylum documents, which may lead to loss of protection status and risk of deportation.
It called on members of the Ezidi community to adhere to laws and regulations to safeguard their legal rights and future in Germany.
The statement concluded by reaffirming its commitment to defending the rights of the Ezidi community and urging greater unity and solidarity during this sensitive period.
