Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani called on the Iraqi government to take greater responsibility for the concerns of Kurdish Ezidi citizens and to care for them “far more than it currently does.” He also reaffirmed his continued efforts to rescue the remaining abducted Ezidis and to establish Sinjar as a province.

His remarks came during the opening speech of the International Conference on the Genocide of the Kurdish Ezidis, held today, Monday, August 25, 2025, and organized by the University of Kurdistan.

President Barzani stated:
“It is deeply painful that, 11 years after this tragedy, nearly half of the Ezidi community is still living in difficult conditions in camps.”

He emphasized that “Iraq is a wealthy country, and as Iraqi citizens, the Ezidis are entitled to many rights from the state,” adding:
“The Iraqi government must take on the concerns of Ezidi citizens and care for them much more than it does now.”

Barzani stressed that “at the very least, Ezidis deserve to have security and safety in their areas, so they can return and rebuild their lives with dignity and proper public services.”

In this context, he underscored the need to implement the agreement between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government to “normalize the situation in Sinjar and its surroundings,” insisting that Ezidis and their homeland must not remain “a battleground for illegal forces and regional agendas.”

He concluded by expressing the Kurdistan Region’s full readiness for “all forms of cooperation and coordination with Baghdad” to achieve these goals.
