Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on Tuesday that Sonia Moghe, a French national who returned from Syria, will be tried on charges of genocide, after France’s Court of Cassation rejected her appeal in a case accusing her of participating in the enslavement of a Ezidi girl in 2015.
According to the sources, Moghe is not only the first woman returning from Syria to be prosecuted for genocide against the Ezidis, but also the first French citizen ever to face this specific charge. Under French law, genocide is punishable by life imprisonment.
The decision marks a significant legal precedent in France’s efforts to prosecute crimes committed by its nationals during the conflict in Syria.
