US Renews Support for Kurdistan Following PM Barzani’s Visit

Sema

The US State Department reaffirmed its support for a strong and stable Kurdistan Region on Tuesday, describing it as beneficial to both the United States and Iraq, following Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s recent visit to Washington.

During a press conference, the State Department highlighted discussions between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and PM Barzani, which focused on expanding economic ties and protecting community rights. Officials said the talks reflected Washington’s continued interest in strengthening its relationship with the Kurdistan Region.

Rubio reportedly welcomed the signing of several contracts between the United States and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), viewing them as advancing mutual interests. The State Department emphasized that these agreements not only strengthen US-Kurdistan ties but also align with broader American goals in Iraq.

The spokesperson also called for greater cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad, particularly in developing the gas sector. Officials noted that natural gas from the Kurdistan Region could play a critical role in supporting Iraq’s energy independence.

The United States has maintained longstanding ties with the KRG, and US companies have invested billions of dollars in the region, especially in the energy sector. PM Barzani’s latest visit to Washington aimed to reinforce these economic partnerships and underscore the KRG’s role in promoting regional stability.

Prime Minister Barzani met with several high-ranking officials during his trip, including Secretary Rubio, in a series of meetings that focused on economic development, energy cooperation, and security coordination. The US administration has repeatedly described the Kurdistan Region as a vital partner in Iraq’s political and economic landscape.
